“Swedish adoptions of classical Greek civilization:
foundations, examples, and contrasts”
by
Johannes Siapkas
PhD, Associate Professor in
Classical archaeology and ancient history
Date: September 23rd, 2021 – Time: 18:00-19:30
Format: Zoom Webinar – Language: English
The lecture will elaborate on Swedish adoptions of classical Greek culture.
Modern conceptualizations of classical antiquity emerged during a period from the 1770s to the 1830s. The presentation will accordingly begin with examples of Swedish adoptions from the early 19th century, and then trace them in a chronological order until today.
However, the actual time of these adoptions is of secondary importance since people continue to engage with them. The lecture will seek to illuminate the ubiquity of the Greek legacy in contemporary Sweden.
